Sam Peezy
THE GOAT

CEO & FOUNDER
Grammy® Considered & Billboard Charting Producer

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on March 19, 1975, producer/artist Sam Peezy (Anthony Dwayne Avery) is a multi instrumentalist with experience in producing multiple genres, with concentration on jazz and hip hop. His musical  journey started at age ten, when he received a trumpet from his father. He would go on to learn to play every instrument of the brass family (trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French horn and tuba). As he prepared to finish high school, he began to experiment on the piano and drums. His love of the drums would lead to him pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Alabama.
It was in college where Peezy’s interests would take a turn. He took interest in producing hip hop at the behest of his best friend Roderick Prince. Prince and Peezy would join forces with three other emcees to become Phasnick. The group would gain regional acclaim with the Peezy produced “Who Can Rock The Party?” Once the group disbanded after college, Peezy ventured out as a solo artist. With his father’s guidance, he started a record label, V.I. (Village Idiot) Records and started work on his first professionally recorded project entitled “Confederate States Of America.” Peezy would then go on to record several other solo projects with none of them gaining any acclaim. In the year 2000, Sam Peezy would meet producer Milwaukee Black through a mutual acquaintance. That meeting would lead to Peezy getting his first production deal with 8Ways Entertainment, the independent label of legendary rapper 8Ball of 8Ball and MJG fame. Although the deal was very short lived, it was during this time that Sam Peezy learned how to use the AKAI MPC 2000. That knowledge would completely change Peezy’s approach to production. . In 2005, Sam Peezy began frequenting beat battles. The beat battle scene had just begun to take off. At the legendary Apache Café in Atlanta, Georgia, Peezy made a name for himself by winning several battles. This would lead to opportunities to produce for then up and coming artists such as B.O.B., Willie Joe and Grandaddy Souf. While Peezy’s name began to gain popularity amongst independent artists in the South, he could not seem to garner any major label recognition. That would become the norm until 2010, when Sam Peezy would meet Enrique “Tetraz” Dent. Dent, immediately recognizing Peezy’s talent, signed Peezy to Krazy Swag Entertainment, an independent label distributed by Universal Music Group. Immediately upon his signing, Peezy was put in complete charge of production duties for the Bass Superstars, a group that consisted of legendary hip hop artists Raheem The Dream, Kilo Ali, 95 South, 69 Boyz, DJ Taz, Dis n Dat and MC Shy D. Their lead singles “Superstar” and “Up” were fully produced and co written by Peezy. Following the buzz of that release, Sam would be introduced to BJ Luster, who then introduced Peezy to Emcee N.I.C.E.

N.I.C.E. had already established himself as a legend in hip hop in his own right by being one of the originating members of the group Lighter Shade of Brown, the first hip hop group on a major label of Latino descent. Peezy and N.I.C.E. hit it off immediately.
Then Peezy’s first major musical accomplishment would occur in the summer of 2017. Emcee N.I.C.E. had decided to return to his gospel roots by releasing a Christian hip hop album. Nearly all of the album’s production was done by Sam Peezy, but N.I.C.E. was in search of THE record that would set him apart from the rest of the budding sub genre. That record would be “Angels,” in which Peezy sampled the legendary Richard Smallwood’s song of the same title. That track was done to commemorate the loss of Sam Peezy’s daughter in 2007. The song “Angels” would go on to chart at number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Songs charts in that summer of 2017. The entire album, “Praise,” would appear on 17 separate charts on Billboard. In 2018, Sam Peezy would get yet another surprise by being considered for his first Grammy nomination.
As of the date of this writing, Sam Peezy has produced innumerable charting songs for independent and major artists, such as gospel legend Fred Hammond, with whom he gained yet another Billboard number one song, along with Emcee N.I.C.E., entitled “Glory To God.” He has even charted a number one jazz record as a pianist under the moniker Miles Anthony Avery. “Spring Hope Eternal,” was recognized as the number one selling jazz single on iTunes in the summer of 2020. He has been Grammy considered for seven years consecutively, and has won several awards, such as Producer of the Year 2023 for the Gospel Choice Music Awards.
Sam Peezy is married to singer/songwriter/ actress Selah Avery, who is most recently noted for her role as “Keisha,” in the blockbuster movie “The Forge.” Peezy has two children, Rhythm Joy Avery (deceased) and a child by his marriage to Selah, Juan DeAngelo Lane, Jr.
